About

I am a teacher of Ancient Languages and Literature as well as the History of Science.

I am trained in Biology and Classics and try to combine those two wherever I can.

I hold a PhD in Classics from Johns Hopkins University and work as a lecturer at the University of Maryland, College Park.

My main research focuses on ancient ideas about creativity. I’m currently working on a book project with the working title Rome and the Crises of Creativity. See under Projects for more.

Besides that I am interested in the ancient thought on “genetics” or genesis, an umbrella term under which the Greeks and Romans thought about the origins of life, procreation, embryology, growth, heredity, etc. We could think about that as a different kind of “creativity,” although for the Romans those two were not always as different as they might look to us.

When I don’t think about the ancient Mediterranean world, I love cafés, bouldering, and cooking. Coincidentally, a lot of my cooking happens to be Mediterranean again🤔. I love the Italian & the Greek cuisine. Occasionally, I also dare taking on some German recipes as well, but usually I save those for trips home.
